CCTV surveillance systems prove to be an invaluable asset keeping an eye and recording the activities in a variety of premises. But, at the end of the day, it is a technology, which needs proper maintenance for seamless working. At times, even after maintaining it properly, issues can crop up, which can lead to a system not working properly.
Here are a few CCTV troubleshooting tips that will help you in keeping your system up and running efficiently.
Verify Power and Connections
At times, it happens that the most obvious thing lies in the root of the trouble. Check if the camera is powered up and connected securely to the network.
Use the Right Combination of Username/Password
Often, people keep using the default passwords, while the same has to be changed by the customer. Changing the password is required too because often we find articles in Wall Street Journal stating how using the default passwords can lead to hacking of the systems. In case the customer doesn’t remember the changed password, then a factory reset might be required.
Fuzzy Video Recording
If you find that the recordings are not of good quality and are fuzzy, then check the focus of the lens. Most of the time, refocusing it will do the trick and you will get sharp images. In case the lens is not focusable, then you need to replace it.
Discover the Camera’s IP Address
Sometimes, the camera and the computer are on the same network or subnet. This creates a problem when you try to ping it from your computer showing messages like ‘Request Time Out’ or ‘Destination Host Unreachable’. To rectify such problems, connect to the camera by using a web browser.
Firmware Requires Upgrade
If you find it difficult to connect to VMS (Virtual Memory System), it’s time to check if the firmware is up to date or not. At times, not upgrading the firmware creates problems, but first, ensure that it is released and recommended by the manufacturer or else it can cause more issues than it solves.
Sometimes, the problems get resolved by performing a simple rebooting. This helps in clearing all the accumulated cache, recalibrating the settings, and renegotiating connections.
Most of the time, the problems or issues cropping up are minor and one of the six troubleshooting tips discussed above can solve it. In case you still face a problem, you can definitely contact the technician.
